SSL Certificate

How does SSL Certificate work and makes your website secure?

SSL protects information by encrypting the data transfer between a user’s  browser and the website. When a user vitsits an SSL/HTTPs website, their browser first verifies if the website’s SSL certificate is valid.

If everything checks out, then the browser users special keys to encrypt the data transfer. This data is then sent back to the intended server (website) where it is decrypted using the unique SSL key.

The encryption of the transmitted data makes sure that all information remains private. Hackers cannot interpret and steal the personal information such as Credit Card Numbers, etc. transmitted under the secure layer. If the data is transmitted without encryption, hackers can steal the personal information such as Login ID, Credit Car Numbers, Email Addresses, Mailing Addresses, Passwords, etc…

How much do SSL Certificates cost?

Although a secure (and SSL-enabled) site is necessary for many sites, the cost and implementation concerns linked with it have stood in the way of its widespread deployment.

Cost of SSL Certificates differs from one certificate authority to another. Many website owners are reluctant to use SSL due to the additional cost. This left many of these websites vulnerable to data and information theft.

A non-profit project called let’s Encrypt decided to fix this by establishing a free certificate authority.

What is Let’s Encrypt?

Let’s Encrypt is a free open certificate authority that aims to provide SSL certificate for general public. It is a project of Internet Research Group, a public service  corporation.

Due to the significance of the project, it quickly earned the support of major companies like Google Chrome, Facebook, Shopify,  WordPress.com and many others.
